What has happened to PM Law Group and the firms connected to it?

PM Law Group and a number of firms operating under or connected to it have ceased trading. As a result, many clients have been left without an active solicitor part-way through their legal matter. This has understandably caused concern, particularly where transactions, court deadlines, or client funds are involved.

Am I still legally represented?

Accepted Answer

In most cases, no. Once a firm has closed, it is no longer able to act for you. Even if your matter was well advanced, you will usually need to instruct a new solicitor to continue your case, meet deadlines, or complete a transaction.

What happens to my case file and documents?

When a law firm closes, client files are usually taken into the control of the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) or an intervention agent appointed by them.
You are still entitled to your file. A new solicitor can request it on your behalf once you formally instruct them. Liberty Solicitors routinely deals with file retrieval following firm closures and can handle this process for you.

Will my matter be delayed?

Some delay is common, but early action significantly reduces disruption. Delays usually arise where no new solicitor is instructed promptly, deadlines are missed, or files and funds are not requested quickly.

What happens to money I have already paid?

Client money should be held separately from a firm’s business accounts. Where a firm has closed, those funds are typically frozen and overseen by the SRA or its appointed agents.

Depending on the circumstances, funds may be:
 • Transferred to your new solicitor
 • Returned directly to you
 • Recovered through the SRA’s compensation arrangements if there is a shortfall

I paid money on account of costs. Is that protected?

Money paid on account of fees is treated differently from money held for a transaction (such as a property deposit). Whether it can be recovered depends on how it was held and what work was done.

Do I need to contact the SRA myself?

You do not have to. In many cases, it is more efficient for your new solicitor to liaise directly with the SRA or the intervention agent on your behalf.

If you have already contacted the SRA, we can work with whatever information you have been given.

Not usually. Where files, documents, and work already completed can be obtained, your matter can often continue from its current stage. Any unavoidable duplication will be explained to you clearly before you commit.

You should contact us immediately. Urgent matters — such as property completions, court deadlines, limitation issues, or hearings — require prompt action. Even if documents are not yet available, protective steps can often be taken.
